Paternal Behavior and Offspring Aggression

Aggression can have a critical impact on the functioning of societies. Some aspects of aggression have received considerable attention, such as links between parenting behavior and offspring aggression in humans. Although acknowledged as being important to the understanding of human aggression, animal aggression has been relatively unstudied. Recent mammalian animal research is emerging that ad...

Of Behavior Extinction - Induced Aggression

Pigeons were conditioned to peck a response key under a procedure that alternated periods of food reinforcement with periods of extinction. The pigeons attacked a nearby pigeon at the onset of extinction. Some also attacked a stuffed model of a pigeon. The duration of attack was an inverse function of the time since the last food reinforcement and a direct function of the number of reinforcemen...

Mapping brain development and aggression.

INTRODUCTION This article provides an overview of the basic principles guiding research on brain-behaviour relationships in general, and as applied to studies of aggression during human development in particular. METHOD Key literature on magnetic resonance imaging of the structure and function of a developing brain was reviewed. RESULTS The article begins with a brief introduction to the me...

Androgen receptors, sex behavior, and aggression.

Androgens are intricately involved in reproductive and aggressive behaviors, but the role of the androgen receptor in mediating these behaviors is less defined. Further, activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis can influence each other at the level of the androgen receptor. Knowledge of the mechanisms for androgens' effects on behaviors through...

Serotonin and aggression and the alcohol-aggression relationship.

The consumption of an intoxicating dose of alcohol increases the likelihood of violent behaviour. Three possible mechanisms involving potentiation, inhibition, and disorganization of behaviour are presented. The manner in which these three effects may be mediated by serotonergic activity is briefly discussed. A more extensive review of the serotonin-aggression relationship is then presented.
